Workers’ Compensation: Overview/Update
for Occupational Health and Safety Professionals
August 7-8, 2008 (Thursday-Friday)
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This two-day course will provide an overview of
the California Workers’ Compensation system and an update on
new or evolving developments in 2008. Topics include an overview of
the California workers’ compensation system, workers’ comp
reform and the QME function at the state level, utilization review,
quality of outcomes and scientific evidence, evidence-based practice,
complications in the medical management and treatment of injured workers,
challenges in medical report writing, primary prevention in the workplace
to prevent injuries, claims, and lost time, interaction and overlap
of FMLA, ADA, and workers’ comp, chronic pain in workers’ comp,
and panel case study discussion.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of this course, attendees will be able to:
- Review the basics of the California Workers’ Compensation system and describe recent reforms and changes in California law
- Discuss the use of the ACOEM guidelines and other evidence-based medicine (EBM) in the treatment of injured workers
- Discuss changes at the Division of Workers’ Compensation (DWC) and the Medical Unit
regarding the QME function
- Discuss the challenges of medical report writing under the new AMA Guides method, from initial evaluation through the determination of maximal medical improvement
- Discuss environmental health issues in workers’ compensation cases
- Identify significant issues that may complicate the management of a work injury claim and interventions to prevent or decrease chances of an adverse outcome
- Discuss the interaction and overlap of ADA, FMLA, State Disability, and Workers’ Compensation
- Review EBM treatment guidelines for chronic pain in workers’ compensation and discuss medical management, modified work, permanent disability, and future medical care
- Develop a three dimensional view of work injury cases from the perspective of the treating provider, applicant attorney, and DWC.
