COURSE TITLE

Ventilation: Diagnosing & Troubleshooting HVAC and Local Exhaust Systems

August 7, 2008 (Thursday)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Anyone with health and safety or facilities management responsibility will inevitably be called upon to address building occupants’ indoor air quality (IAQ) concerns. How quickly, effectively, and convincingly you address those concerns will probably dictate whether the issue lingers a few days or a few months.

This class will provide you with a working knowledge of how to evaluate heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and to identify some common underlying causes of air quality complaints in commercial buildings. The class will take a group tour of the building’s HVAC system conducted by the course instructors.

Every safety and industrial hygiene practitioner has encountered a laboratory hood, welding exhaust, plating tank, woodworking machine hood, or other local exhaust system that is not working properly to protect employees. Sometimes the issue is whether the system has ever worked properly, while in other cases the performance of a previously adequate system has degraded.

The local exhaust systems portion of this class will cover the steps to diagnose the system to find the root cause(s) of the malfunction, and then identify cost-effective steps to resolve the problems. Participants will leave with the knowledge to diagnose and troubleshoot systems, and also work effectively with maintenance and engineering staff to help them understand and resolve LEV performance problems.

  • Troubleshoot ventilation system operation
  • Estimate adequate air supply
  • Describe some common “quick fixes” for HVAC systems
  • Discuss common modes of failure in local exhaust systems
  • Describe simple steps in troubleshooting local exhaust problems
  • Execute fan performance tests for static pressure, rotating speed, and electrical power consumption
  • Describe how to correct problems of hood performance, air flow, noise and exhaust re-entry into buildings
