COURSE TITLE

Lead-Based Paint Abatement Supervision and Monitoring

COURSE DESCRIPTION

In this five-day course you study and practice lead hazard control methods. You learn how full lead abatement is done. You also study how to safely disturb leaded paint as part of a renovation or construction project. This course meets the California Department of Public Health (DPH) and U.S. EPA training requirements for supervision and/or project monitoring.

On the first day we cover background information about lead and its uses in buildings, health effects, regulations, and respiratory protection. On the following four days, you learn about the newest techniques for safely controlling lead paint hazards. Experienced environmental consultants and lead abatement contractors discuss various methods. They cover work practices, safety measures, which options work best in which situations, and how to do final clearance testing.

You participate in elaborate hands-on workshops that cover the techniques and equipment used in lead abatement. Workshop instructors demonstrate removal chemicals. You build containments, use special HEPA-attached grinding tools, clean areas contaminated with invisible particles, take air samples, and evaluate abatement equipment and options.

You'll use the required HUD Guidelines course textbook, and you'll also receive several hundred pages of material developed and copyrighted by UC Berkeley. Many other schools try to use our materials because they know our materials are the best. No other school even comes close to matching the number and quality of our instructors. The best materials and the best instructors make for the best value in lead training.

Required Textbook

On the first day of the course, you will receive a three-ring binder with several hundred pages of material developed and copyrighted by UC Berkeley. But before you begin the course, we strongly encourage some advance reading from the required course textbook, Guidelines for the Evaluation and Control of Lead-Based Paint Hazards in Housing. (This textbook is commonly called the HUD Guidelines.)

You may purchase the guidelines from us for $45 plus $5 postage. Or you may download the guidelines from www.hud.gov/offices/lead/leadreferencelibrary.cfm. To order the guidelines from us, please mail your request and payment of $50 by check (payable to UC Regents) or credit card to: COEH Continuing Education Program, UC Berkeley M/C 5120, 2223 Fulton St., 2nd Floor, Berkeley, CA 94720-5120. Be sure to include a shipping address and a daytime telephone number. If you’d like to order by phone, call 510-643-7277.
