COURSE TITLE
Ergonomic Assessment of Upper Limb Risk Factors for Effective Return-to-Work Programs

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This new professional development course aims to help those who are responsible for return-to-work programs. The emphasis of the course will be on identifying, assessing, and controlling risk factors for upper limb injuries and the formulation of solutions to facilitate return-to-work and developing recommendations for modified work. Various assessment techniques will be practiced with videotaped scenarios.
This workshop will be very interactive with prompted discussion and invitations for participants to share experiences and ideas. Small group exercises with videotaped case studies will facilitate and improve learning of concepts and skills.
PROGRAM
- The science behind return-to-work programs: essential components
- Overview of common upper limb injuries and associated risk factors
- Understanding the job and identifying the risks
- Conducting a risk assessment on upper limb musculoskeletal disorder risk factors
- Determining risk controls for modified work
- Group practice with videotaped case studies in risk assessment techniques
- Group practice with development of work modification recommendations
COURSE DIRECTOR
Judy Village, CPE, MSc, Judy Village & Associates, Adjunct Professor, University of British Columbia, Canada, School of Occupational & Environmental Hygiene (COEH)
Judy Village is a Certified Professional Ergonomist in the U.S. and Canada and has 26 years experience in applied ergonomics research, design, and consulting. Ms. Village has worked extensively with several health care facilities and architectural groups during all stages of design and planning. She has also worked extensively with a large urban library design, and has been involved at all stages of various office design projects. Ms. Village is also an experienced trainer and currently teaches a University masters level ergonomics course and runs numerous 2-day to 5-day professional development programs in ergonomics.
Course Objectives
On completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Explain the essential components of a successful return-to-work program
- Identify the work-related risk factors for upper limb injuries in a variety of occupations
- Conduct an assessment of risk factors using a variety of different techniques
- Develop recommendations for reducing risk and facilitating modified work to prevent further upper limb injuries
AUDIENCE
Occupational health and safety professionals, including industrial hygienists, safety professionals, occupational health nurses and ergonomists, rehabilitation professionals, and other involved in return-to-work programs.
